About VIVO Carbon
CO₂ - too much of a good thing in the wrong place
All life is based on carbon. We are convinced that CO₂ does not have to be the cause of climate collapse, but can be integrated into the cycle of life. VIVO Carbon's primary goal is to help balance the CO₂ content in the atmosphere and sequester the surplus with the help of trees. In doing so, we regenerate productive ecosystems, produce climate-friendly raw materials and replace fossil fuels.
Global challenges
Climate crisis
Global warming is accelerating. We need a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, resilient ecosystems and effective CO₂ sinks on a large scale.
Degeneration of soil, water and biodiversity
Current farming practices can contribute to erosion, soil degradation, water pollution and loss of biodiversity.
We use fast-growing trees in agriculture as a highly effective tool for carbon sequestration on a large scale. Agroforestry systems create synergies between woodland strips and arable crops or livestock. Typically, 5 to 60% of the total area of an agroforestry system is planted with trees. Classic crops grow on the remaining area. The positive interactions between trees and crops result in a higher overall productivity of the area and, despite the many climate and environmental benefits, there is no conflict with food production. Agroforestry practices are readily available and provide large quantities of universally required raw materials that are essential for a future bio economy. CO₂ should not only be incorporated into living, productive ecosystems, but later also be stored permanently in buildings and products.
Agroforestry is a highly underestimated tool to counteract global warming and achieve many positive side effects.
Agroforestry enables:
-
Immediately available CO₂ sequestration
-
Help with the regeneration of soils and ecosystems
-
Increasing biodiversity
-
Improving the local microclimate
-
No conflict, but synergies with food production
-
Improving the productivity of agricultural land
-
Fast scalability with pioneer tree species
-
Improving the welfare of livestock and habitat for wild animals
-
Diversification of farm incomes
-
Provision of large quantities of renewable raw materials
-
Permanent integration of CO₂ in healthy ecosystems and long-lasting products
To achieve this and to establish agroforestry as an effective method on a broad scale, VIVO Carbon needs partners and supporters. Given the growing interest in voluntary climate certificates and support for regional climate protection measures, we believe that CO₂ sequestration performance is the best available reference value to evaluate effective projects and enable their financing.
